What causes anxiety disorders, and what steps can we take to manage them? In this article, an approach presented in the Bible will be examined.

It is often said that 85–90% of the things we fear never actually occur. As for the remaining fears, we either find ways to cope with them or cannot control them in the first place. Despite this, many individuals struggle with chronic anxiety, which can evolve into anxiety disorders. These conditions significantly impact our lives, often preventing us from experiencing them the way we would like to. What does the Bible offer in terms of guidance on fear, and how can we address it in our daily lives?

Anxiety Disorders – Statistics

Anxiety disorders have become the most widespread mental health concern in Europe. Research indicates that around 14% of Europeans are affected by these conditions.1 In Poland, a study found that 16.07% of individuals have experienced anxiety-related disorders at least once in their lifetime, with 5.42% reporting such issues in the past year.2 Additionally, many people struggle with symptoms commonly associated with anxiety disorders, including panic attacks, memory difficulties, insomnia, and other related conditions.

Anxiety disorders also affect children. In 2021, UNICEF published a report on the mental health of teenagers aged 15–19, showing that 19% of boys and 16% of girls in this age group experience anxiety. Anxiety and depression account for the majority of these cases. In Poland, the report indicates that 10.8% of children aged 10–19 are affected, amounting to more than 409,000 teenagers. A more comprehensive estimate from the Supreme Audit Office suggests that approximately 630,000 children in Poland are in need of psychological support.3

Anxiety Disorders – Causes

Anxiety disorders are often characterised as one of the major ‘diseases of civilization’ of the 21st century, and this is not without reason. In today’s world, we have constant access to news from across the globe. A significant portion of the media focuses on topics such as wars, tragedies, and crimes. Whether the world is genuinely becoming more problematic or not, the mass media frequently creates the impression that it is.4,5 This became particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic and the lockdown measures introduced in 2020.

Anxiety can also arise from more personal factors. It is often triggered by events such as unemployment. The difficulty of securing new employment brings concerns about how to provide for ourselves, our families, and cover essential expenses. Furthermore, the workplace environment itself can negatively affect mental health. Common causes of mental health issues in the workplace include high levels of stress (59%), time pressure (51%), and excessive workloads (48%).6

We often experience anxiety about the well-being of our loved ones, fearing that something might happen to them, whether through an accident, crime, or even a terrorist attack. Additionally, worries about how we are perceived by others can contribute to our anxiety. The pervasive influence of social media and the rise of online harassment further intensify these fears.

What the Bible Says About Fear

Although our world today is vastly different from that of ancient times, fear and anxiety were also present in the lives of people from those eras. The Bible frequently depicts individuals who grappled with fear. One such example is Jacob, the son of Isaac, who was terrified of his brother Esau’s retribution after stealing his blessing. His fear is evident in his prayer to God, where he pleads: ‘Save me, I pray, from the hand of my brother Esau, for I am afraid he will come and attack me, and also the mothers with their children’ (Genesis 32:12).

Many prophets and other biblical figures faced fear, including Abraham,7 Moses,8 Elijah,9 and Jeremiah.10 These individuals, despite their significant roles, were not exempt from fear and anxiety. The disciples of Jesus, too, experienced fear, scattering when He was arrested11 and later hiding after His crucifixion, fearful for their own safety.12 Even Jesus, in His moment of intense emotional distress over taking on the weight of humanity’s sins, was overcome with such intense distress that he began to sweat drops of blood.13

Overcoming Anxiety: The Role of Faith in Finding Peace

Jesus, who assured us that ‘even the very hairs of your head are all numbered’ and encouraged us not to be overcome by fear, reminding us that we are more valuable than many sparrows (Matthew 10:30–31), fully understood the weight of fear. He experienced it firsthand in the Garden of Gethsemane. This understanding is reflected throughout the Bible, where the message to ‘fear not’ appears over a hundred times in various forms.14 Jesus lived out this message by surrendering Himself to arrest, despite the intense fear He felt, in order to fulfil His purpose of dying on the cross for our salvation.

The same was true for the other heroes of faith that were previously mentioned. Jacob faced Esau, who greeted him with forgiveness.15 In a similar way, Jesus’ disciples found peace after witnessing His resurrection and later receiving the Holy Spirit.16. Despite the fear they must have felt while spreading the Good News, they overcame their apprehension of the unknown and of death, driven by the certainty of God’s presence.

Words of Encouragement

God extends the same comforting words to each of us. We all long for the inner peace that allows us to live life to its fullest, particularly when we commit ourselves fully to following His will. For many, chronic anxiety is a heavy burden. Christ invites us to seek refuge in Him, saying: ‘Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light’ (Matthew 11:28–30).

We live in a society where many people rely on therapy to address anxiety disorders and chronic stress. While seeking professional help is certainly valuable, we believe that the most important step is to place our trust in God, who knows how to care for us. He assures us with the beautiful promise that He will always be with us if we follow His will and trust Him in all things: ‘Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete’ (John 16:24).
