The Bible says that God created humanity in His own image, as male and female (Genesis 1:27). A defining characteristic of men is their generally greater aptitude for engaging with the world of objects and systems. By contrast, women tend to be more attuned to people and often display a stronger inclination towards forming interpersonal relationships. For men, social interaction typically poses a greater challenge than engagement with objects. It is helpful for them to recognise this and to learn from their mothers or other women how to understand people and how to adopt a mature approach to relationships.

Masculinity today

When we look at the world today, it is easy to see how much the idea of masculinity has changed. The ‘manly man’ is no longer seen as a macho figure with a cigarette in his mouth, unconcerned with his appearance and unwilling to show emotion. Now, he is more often seen as someone with an open mind and strong character, who sets clear goals and takes care of his partner and family.

Modern masculinity is increasingly defined by balance across all areas of life. A man is considered successful when he demonstrates stability, self-control, and a sense of direction. Women are placing greater value on maturity and responsible masculinity, rather than on impulsive or boyish behaviour.

Unfortunately, many men today display behaviour that stands in stark contrast to true manliness. They show cowardice in two key areas: in facing the external world and in confronting the truth about themselves — their thoughts, actions, consequences, experiences, and commitments. Such men often seek escape through alcohol, drugs, or violence, with women frequently left to bear the consequences.

It is true that the modern age makes it more difficult for men to develop into the best version of themselves. Every era presents its own unique opportunities and challenges in this regard, but today the obstacles are particularly acute. The prevailing culture, which may be described without exaggeration as coarse and at times even primitive, presents a genuine barrier to men seeking to grow in love and responsibility. Still, if boys are given strong role models at home and in their immediate surroundings, if they set high standards for themselves, and if they become close to Jesus from a young age, they will learn how to grow into mature and joyful manhood. Fortunately, many such men exist, marked by perseverance, honour, and gentleness as partners, husbands, fathers, and friends.

True masculinity – emotional maturity

When discussing true masculinity, emotional maturity is crucial: it is important for men to know how to talk about their feelings, admit their mistakes, and gain a deeper understanding of life. Rather than withdrawing and expecting others to interpret his silence, they should learn to articulate their thoughts clearly. The capacity to form emotional connections is a fundamental aspect of masculinity.

Masculinity also involves self-awareness, knowing who you are now, where you are going, and remembering who you used to be. A man should recognise that although he sometimes fails and makes mistakes, he is no longer repeating the same ones because he is learning from them. Bad days will come, but each morning he gets up and keeps working towards his goals with determination. It is important for him to see that every situation he faces and every person he meets has meaning, offering a lesson and adding something of value. A true man understands that everything in his life was necessary to bring him to where he is now. He is at peace with the person he has become through those experiences.

True masculinity – responsibility

A true man is responsible in every sense of the word. He is accountable for himself, for his family, and for their shared daily life, not only for earning money.

A man should take responsibility not just for his duties but also for the consequences of his choices and actions. Real responsibility is closely connected to creativity, dedication, and the satisfaction that comes with achieving goals. It also involves using his full potential, including his skills, knowledge, and the gifts he has been given. It is important to recognise the fruits God expects from him and to take conscious steps towards bringing them to life.

True masculinity – maturity

The foundation of mature masculinity lies in deeply rooted spirituality. It enables us to discover the meaning of our lives and our inherent dignity. Through spiritual depth, we develop a fuller sense of our humanity and become more open to our dreams, ideals, and aspirations. Ultimately, spirituality draws us closer to God, from whom we learn how to live well in the world.

A mature man, following the example of Jesus, shows gentleness and tenderness towards his wife and children. Only a man who has learned to govern his emotions and impulses, who practises self-control, is truly capable of loving a woman. Daily life presents him with many chances to face a demanding reality, and in doing so, he comes face to face with himself—his flaws, weaknesses, and limitations.

A mature man, following the example of Jesus, draws his strength from a personal relationship with God. He begins each day with Him, not only knowing God’s Word but remaining rooted in it. He speaks to God constantly and turns to Him in every decision. His choices show a clear desire to follow God’s will and to put it into practice.

A mature man is not afraid of tears or deep emotion. Even so, his actions are guided not by feelings but by complete trust in God. ‘Father, into Your hands I commit My spirit’ (Luke 23:46). Jesus is the model of true masculinity. Those who follow Him embody what it means to be a man.

As Scripture says:

‘Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you’ (Deuteronomy 31:6).

‘Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go’ (Joshua 1:9).

‘Be strong, therefore, and prove yourself a man’ (1 Kings 2:2).

‘Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass’ (Psalm 37:5).
